Summary of the 2/2008 newsletter

The evolutionen newsletter is only available in German. You will find here brief summaries of the current contents. Please consult the newsletter archive for older summaries.

The second newsletter of 2008 addresses issues relating to the development of managers in the introductory remarks and attachments. Reference is also made to the change of CEO at Deutsche Post AG; Dr. Frank Appel has succeeded Dr. Klaus Zumwinkel. What is the state of affairs regarding trust in the business community on the part of the media, institutions and society as a whole? This is the first issue which the newsletter addresses. A warm welcome to all the readers of the English summary.

The newsletter focuses on the following topics:
  1. In an interview with Ralf Dürrwang, Deutsche Post AG, Bonn, the following question is the focal point of attention: what will change for managers at Deutsche Post with the appointment of the new CEO? Ralf Dürrwang explains that in his capacity as the head of a business unit Frank Appel has already supported and even promoted both post-heroic management and a value oriented management style.

This means that, in the future, too, the style of management prevailing at Deutsche Post will entail understanding management as a service – “the courage to serve“ rather than “being a supervisor“.

Ralf Dürrwang speaks of a compass of values which are being clearly supplemented by Frank Appel in terms of, for example, integrity, a sense of responsibility and empathy.

  2. Under Coaching instruments we have introduced the Kübler-Ross grieving process, which is not only applicable to people, but also to institutions, municipal bodies and, obviously, companies. The typical process steps are: a. Denial, b. Anger, c. Negotiation, d. Depression and e. Acceptance. Deutsche Post AG, whose CEO, Klaus Zumwinkel, has just surprisingly resigned, is possibly undergoing this very process. Many members of staff who were very attached to their old boss are confronted with his sudden departure and personally affected. We can learn from Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, a death research specialist, how to proceed from silence to acceptance.

  3. The newsletter concludes with some background thoughts on our action stimulus “The New Aspects”, in this case, specifically on the leadership process. What distinguishes a “manager without attributes“ from a leader? How precisely do we envisage the process? And what distinguishes a manager who functions from a manager who evolves?

We believe that, for the individual, greater awareness of and clarity regarding their own processes and those of others most definitely results in the assumption of greater responsibility and, ultimately, also in real motivation.
It is anticipated that the next evolutionen newsletter will appear on 9.5.2008.
Thank you very much for your interest!
